How do I know if there is a possibility my building has asbestos in it?

Contrary to popular belief, asbestos is actually still used in some modern materials and may be found in newer buildings. The concern with modern buildings is whether the materials containing asbestos are friable, or able to crumble when disturbed. If you are performing any renovations or demolition and don’t know if there is a risk, you should have tests done to see if there is asbestos present before getting started. Additionally, asbestos was an extremely popular building material prior to the late 1980s, used in everything from insulation to adhesives, so if your building was constructed before then, it is a good idea to have tests and surveys done to determine if it is present and what your risk of exposure is. If you recently purchased the property, you can ask if the previous owners have ever had testing done, but we always recommend getting a second round of tests if there is ever any doubt about the accuracy of previous results.
